What is the verb form of the word “archery”?

gburgmommy asked:

Is it “arching,” “archering,” or something succinct like that? Or is it just, “shooting some bows and arrows”? It seems so clumsy, somehow, to say that mouthful every time!
By “archery” I mean the sport of shooting with bows and arrows at a target.

What is the verb for archery?

Archery is a noun. One who performs archery is an archer. But what is the verb for actually PERFORMING archery? Would it be “to arch”?

Does anyone know any phrases/words deriving from archery?

For example, ‘keep it under your hat’ comes from archers keeping spare strings dry under their hats.
How did they originate?
