What should I expect to pay for archery hobby start up?

Im interested in starting archery as a hobby…. targets only. I happened to be in the area of a MAJOR sport/hunting outfitter and when I walked in the archery department - all the bows I happened to see were either $70 sets for kids or $500 bows for adults.

What should I expect to pay for the start-up things I will need? And, what wil I need exactly?

I would go to a indoor archery range and pro-shop and not a big -box retailer(they are for people that think they know what they want).
I would ask at the pro-shop to look at some used bows for target shooting, look at say a 45 pound pull recurve, have them setup a rest for the arrow to match your shooting style(fingers or release) have them measure your arrow length and they can set a knocking point for you as well.
1.Bow about $100 to $150
2.arrow rest $40 to $50 (then again, the bow might have one)
3. a release $50.00
4. sights for shooting ?
5. arrows will be the major factor(along with shooting form) in accuracy so don’t be cheap, when you get to the point of having experience then you can order the correct weight/spine and length arrows from bass pro…….
6.you will probably want an arm guard as well..
i would recommend going to the range when they are having leagues and you can watch and get an idea of where to start and where it may take you…….good luck…..

My sister-n-law bought a bow from Gander mountain completely set up(sights-rest-limb savers-etc.) during a clearence sale $299 (orig. $425+) so do a little home work and look around. also look into used bows some pro shop sell used bows you can get some real good deals that way too, check out this line of bows Monsterbows.com they are a new company and make smaller bows that women really like, my sister-n-law, wife, and daughter all want one. My snl and I have about 300 shots each thru one of their early models.
bow $200-800
arrows $45-150 a dzn.
target points $7.50 dzn
sight $35-150
rest $30-150
release aid (if you use one) $25-200
peep sight (if you like them) $5
arm gaurd $15
tab or glove (if you dont use a release) $10-30
Bow case (manditory in almost all states when transporting in a vehicle) $25-200+
Arrow case (only if the bow case wont hold arrows)$20
Keep in mind these prices are for NEW and high end stuff, you can keep costs down by looking around at garage sales, used stuff at archery shops, and Walmart and Kmart are great places to buy the extra items (release sights rests things like that) and you will get them cheaper too. most of the stuff they sell is made by a well known company based in MI just put into cheaper packaging, and you wont be out of alot of money if you decide you dont like it. Look at the cabelas web site and bass pro site, you will get a good idea of starter equipment to the higher end equipment. If you buy used you sometimes can cut these cost in half sometimes more. Good Luck
