There are many different rounds in archery. The ones that I know really well are the FITA rounds.
FITA is the world governing body for the sport of archery as it pertains to the Olympics.
A FITA outdoor round is shot with 144 arrows, 36 arrow per distance, 4 distances makes a full round. So that makes 1440 the perfect score for a FITA. The closest anyone has gotten to that magic number is Park Sung Hyun a Korean woman who shot a 1405 with a recurve. Now mind you that the men shoot at different distances than the women, it’s 90-70-50-30m for men and 70-60-50-30m for women. The highest compound for a full FITA is 1413 I believe.
Then there’s the FITA indoor round, a full FITA indoor round is 120 arrows at 18m/20yards. That’s a total of 1200. Although that can be broken down into 4 separate 300 rounds, with 30 arrows each.
Then there’s the FITA 900 round, it’s an outdoor round with 3 distances, 30 arrows per distance. The distances are 60-50-40m for a standard 900 or yards for an American 900.
Then since 1992, there’s the Olympic round. It’s done head to head with each archer shooting 12 arrows for a total of 120 per round. World record for that is a 119 shot recently by another Korean lady whose name slips my mind at the moment.
There are other rounds used such as field round, or 3d round. There are games of archery done on skis or with running.
So right now the highest point for any FITA tournament is a 10, but that is changing soon enough as the compound folks are getting rather close to that maximum point.
The term “Gold” is sometimes used to say that the arrow has landed on the yellow center part of the target. On a FITA target, the word “Gold” can mean a 9 or a 10. Another term that has come up recently is the “X” ring, a smaller ring inside the 10 ring used to break ties.
