How come there are only 4 events in Archery in Beijing Olympics?

    you’re right, only 4 gold medals will be at stake in archery event in the coming Olympics. mens and womens team events and mens and womens individual events.

    in fact, before there are only 2 individual events that were being contested in the event since it was re-introduced in 1972 and it was only in 1988, that the team events were included.

    these 4 events were included in the Olympic Games upon the approval of the IOC members. No clear reason behind it.

    You mean why there is no compound in the Olympics? The compound bow was in its infancy back in 1972 when archery was reintroduced. So, there really was no widespread support for it back then. Later on, the IOC said for compound to be included, archery as a whole has to withdraw again and resubmit a modified application. Noone wanted to take this chance.

    Another reason for it, is that compound competition does not offer any unique athletic skill that recurve doesn’t. Now something like compound field is entirely different, but then you get to the first reason above.
