even for general familiarity you should match your arrow stiffness to your bow’s draw weight. There is some safety involved and it will allow you to maximize your arrow performance.

well it depends…do you want to get into competitions? because then you’ll have to know at what distance the target will be, etc. if you just wanna have fun at archery, you can pretty much do whatever you please.

I don’t think there are any regulations on buying a bow like there are for purchasing a gun.
Although, bows aren’t cheap. A good compound bow will cost you at least $500. They usually come without accessories so you’ll have to pay for those as well.
Choose one that can accommodate your draw length and strength. You don’t want one too short or too long.

That is a start, Just be advised that here in NY, shooting a bow is the same as shooting a gun and you must be 500 feet from any occupied dwelling unless the occupants give you permission.
Find a club or shop with a range, be sure the arrows match the bow and your draw length and listen to the advice of the better shooters. I am lucky enough to have several world class archers to talk with, just not lucky enough to be any good at it, no matter what.

Suggestion: Find yourself a local Sporting Goods Store that sells Archery equipment and go there and ask questions. Most all of these stores have staff trained not only to help you choose the best equipment for you individually, and how it is to be used effectively. There is absolutely no need to spend a lot of money here as you are just starting out.
The rules are there are no rules. If you decide to shoot at home, make sure you have a good target/backstop (Also available at the local Archery Dealer or Pro-Shop.) There are inexpensive Video’s you can rent or buy that will show you what you need to know starting with the basic’s. This is a great sport and you will have a blast. Just take your time and learn as much as you can before you spend any big money.
